The town was founded in 1855 as an agricultural community named for Captain James Kirkpatrick of Vancouver's squadron who fought against Native Americans in what is now central Washington. In 1902, Kirkland became a city after it was annexed by Seattle. The name "Kirkland" comes from Captain James Kirkpatrick and his men who were fighting against Native Americans near present-day Kirkland during what is now central Washington State. After defeating their opponents, Captain Kirkpatrick's force landed on land that later became part of Kirkland. The first settler in what would become Kirkland was John Hancey who built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the Snake River in 1855. Hancey's cabin served as both home and office until 1857 when he moved his business downriver to present-day Everett where he continued operations until 1861 when he sold his land to David Stevenson who laid out a town called Stevenson Landing on current day Foster Road between Everett and Walla Walla Streets Hancey's original cabin still stands today within walking distance of downtown Kirkland while other buildings are located along present day Foster Road including Stevenson Hall which houses Brown University’s School of Veterinary Medicine In 1902, Seattle annexered much of western King County including parts of Stevens City and portions of modern day Kailua-Kona As part of this annexation process, Stevens City renamed itself Kailua-Kona after its then mayor Hiram Bingham In 1907 however with construction underway on new Tacoma Municipal Airport just east of downtown Tacoma (later known as SeaTac Airport), Kailua-Kona again reverted back to its previous name During World War II USS Enterprise (CVN 71) docks at Tacoma Municipal Dockyard for repairs following damage done by Japanese forces carrier Yamato during her attack on Pearl Harbor On 8 December 1942 Enterprise sailed from Tacoma Executive Dockyards bound for Pearl Harbor but due rough seas encountered off Waimāli Atoll she had Tochigi Maru berth available so she anchored off Enderby Island which enabled her crew ashore to weatherly repel Japanese assault party led by Vice Admiral Shimada Hisokawa On 10 December 1942 Enterprise arrived at Hawaiian Islands Joint Base Pearl Harbor– Hickam Field having successfully defended herself against Japanese attack
