By 1865, Kapp and other early settlers had built a log cabin on present day Main Street between Second Avenue South and Third Avenue North; they called it "The Log Cabin".[3] In 1898,[4] Mayor Ambrose Bierce founded the first high school in Thurston County – Seattle Preparatory School – which soon became known as America's Preppy High School because its students had excellent academic records and were not just 'the kids from around town'. In 1899[5], when Sherman Alexie began attending school here as an 8th grader,[6], he became one of America's most well-known authors; he later served as mayor here from 1974 to 1984.
