Kirkland, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 12,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Kirkland is east of Seattle and north of Bellevue. The city's main street is Broadway. In 1861, when Confederates attacked Fort Sumter near Tacoma, Washington (site of today's Tacoma), General Robert E Lee ordered Major General George Biddle to take command of all forces within easy marching distance of Spokane Falls (the confluence of the Columbia River and Snake Rivers). By 1863, Biddle had advanced nearly 150 miles northward through central Washington into Canada before turning back southward towards Tacoma with only infantry and artillery support available for an attempt to retake Fort Sumter; his force consisted mostly farmers and other unmounted men supported by wagons drawn by horses or oxen
