This law continued until 1975 when it was changed to allow possession of handguns by those who are 21 years old or older with a valid permit from another state or country if possessed in accordance with state law which allows such possession without registration or mental health evaluation. Kent and his wife Maynarda Hill. The name "Kent" comes from the Greek word κεντρικός (kentros), meaning "high road." The town is located just north of Wenatchee on U.S. Route 395 and it straddles the Wenatchee River valley to the east and south. To the west are hills that make up part of Mount Rainier National Park. According to 2000 census data, there were 5,582 people in Kent—4% more than the 4,923 counted in Wenatchee-Tahoma combined. Of those living here according to Census data: 98% are white; 1% black or African American; 0% Native American; 2% Asian or Pacific Islander; 2% Hispanic or Latino; 1% other race (including 1% who are two races). In terms of age groupings: 60%-64%; 65%-74%; 75%-79%. For males: 47%, 50%, 53%. For females: 43%, 46%, 49%. The median household income for residents here was $51,589 compared to $39,415 for Wenatchee-Tahoma residents as a whole ($60,046 vs $46,713). About 6 out of 10 households were headed by someone under 18 years old (); about 3 out of 10 households had someone 65 years or older (); about 1 out of 10 households had someone 85 years or older (); and only about 1/10th household belonged to a family with five members or less (). About 82% of all adults working full time year round earned over $7500 per year (). Kent was founded in 1851 and named for George Kent, an early settler. The town developed around a busy canal system that connected Puget Sound with the Strait of Juan de Fuca. In 1905 the canals were replaced by arterial roads and the town lost its status as an agricultural center but has since regained some importance as a commercial and industrial center. The first permanent settler in Kent was George Kent Jr., who arrived in 1851 from Mercer Island, British Columbia. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and started farming land around it. By 1865 there were 10 people living in Kent; six of them were farmers and four were traders or merchants. By 1870 there were 20 people living in Kent; 12 of them were farmers and 8were traders or merchants. One hundred years later there are still over 100 people living in Kent including 50 farmers, 30 traders/merchants, 5 school teachers, 4 firefighters/EMTs, 2 doctors (one retired), 1 nurse (one retired), 1 musician (1 retiree) and 6 dogs! There are also several businesses such as A & W Brewing Company which was founded by C P Whitehead in 1911 and still operates today.

In 1933, the city of Kent merged with the neighboring towns of Lynnwood and Olympia to form the new city of Olympia.
