Kent, Washington is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. The community was settled by Scottish and Norwegian immigrants in the early 1800s. McKay's family operated a farm for several years before moving to what is now the north side of town. In 1839, Arent Niven purchased land east of town from McKay and began developing it into a small farming community with four homes and two stores. Niven named his new settlement after himself—Kentucky—in honor of his birthplace in Scotland. Niven's son-in-law, John Nestor (1814-1893), took over development of Kent following his father's death in 1845. Nestor built two schools and a store near the center of town while also expanding home ownership to allow more residents to pursue successful careers outside the agricultural sector. By 1860, Nestor had developed nearly all of what is today downtown Kent into single-family homes and businesses; he also laid out streets that parallel those today serving as Main Street and First Avenue northward from downtown. In 1865, Jens Julius Fosdahl moved to Kent from Whitewater Junction, Kansas; he soon became active in local politics and served as mayor from 1868 to 1870 and again from 1872 to 1875. Fosdahl donated land adjacent to downtown for a public square that would serve as a meeting place for the villagespeople; he also laid out streets that paralleled those today serving as Main Street and First Avenue northward from downtown. Fosdahl's donation helped make Kent one of King County's most important communities during its earliest years; it remains an important commercial center today thanks to its location on main thoroughfares both southbound along First Avenue past Mount Rainier National Park toward Seattle proper while also providing access through downtown onto Interstate 5 within minutes' walk or bike ride away for many residents who work inside or near Seattle City Hall or other major business districts within walking distance either southbound on I-5 past Puget Soundview down into SeaTac International Airport then along CenturyLink Way towards Bellevue before returning back up I-5 southeast reaching Tacoma just east of Interstate 5 exit 132 heading northwest then turning northeast continuing on I-5 until reaching Umatilla Lake just southeast of Olympia

Multnomah County was dissolved on December 1, 1898, and its land became part of the new Lincoln County.
