Kent, Washington is a small town in Yakima County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. Kent was founded by farmers in 1885 and named after George Kent, an early settler. The community was first located on the east side of the Yakima River and then moved to its present site in 1907. The original plat for Kent was filed on January 9, 1885 by Wm. Sibley and Hugh Clements (two of the original settlers). The plat includes land that now forms the eastern border of Kent (northwest to south), portions of which are still owned by the initial settlers today. The current town name originated with a dispute between two groups of settlers over whether to call their new community "Kentucky" or "George." Ultimately, it was decided to name their new community after George Kent because he had been so influential in helping them settle their farmlands. In 1907, when it became clear that construction on what would become Seattle had begun almost simultaneously on both sides of the Yakima River, several members from Kent decided to move into downtown Seattle and take up residence there. Kent, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first European explorers to visit what is now Kent were Captain George Vancouver and his men in 1792. In 1824, John C. Frémont passed through the area on his way to explore the west coast of North America. On July 4, 1825, Congress authorized the erection of a post office in Kent by Samuel Latham Postmaster General. The first post office opened in December of that year with Wm Halsey as its first clerk. In 1847–48 an LDS congregation was organized in what is today Kent by Revs Purdy and Richter with land donated from James Kappenberg and others near Mount Vernon Park. A church building had been erected there but it burned down in 1865 while being used as a schoolhouse for Danish immigrants who then acquired title to the property and built their own house on it soon thereafter In 1875 two small towns were merged into one when they were combined into King County: Beacon (northwest) and Harborview (southwest). That merger created new streets within each town including Quincy Street which runs through both Beachwood and Harborview today . A store on Quincy Street served as the nucleus for what became known as "the old Merchants' Exchange" or simply "the Exchange". It was here where farmers could buy goods they needed for their farms while also exchanging goods with other farmers around town From this store grew what would become known as "the Farmers' Market." Over time more businesses cropped up; such as a bakery called The Dutchman's Bake Shop which opened in 1922; several jewelry stores starting up around 1930; taverns/bars like Tavern Annie's beginning operating c1940; movie theaters like Paramount Cinemas opening up around 1950-1960 etc., until finally Amazon started deliveries here in 1997 having previously only sent items by boat
