The impetus for settlement in Kent was twofold: gold prospecting and timber production. The town's first settler, George Hanes, began homesteading in 1856 on the east side of present-day Central Avenue. In 1865, the U.S. government established a military post at what is now downtown Kent and named it Fort Vancouver after British general Sir John A. Fraser that year. In 1868, settlers arrived from Oregon with smallpox-infected animals and soon erected sod houses on land they had claimed as their ownvehemently asserting their right to do so under Indian Treaty land acquisitions of that era). In 1875 an act of Congress designated central section 6 (now Central Avenue) as the site of what would become downtown Kent; this became official when railroad tracks were laid through the town in 1886 following which business boomed and development took off! By 1920 there were over 1,000 businesses in downtown Kent employing more than 60% of its workforce! Thanks to Interstate 5 along which travel increased exponentially during the 1970s and 1980s as people commuting northward discovered larger job opportunities available closer to Tacoma or Seattle outside of Greater Portland or Eugene; by 2000 Downtown Kent had declined by 10% but still employed over 50% of its workforce! Kent, Washington is a town in Chelan County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in Kent were Adam and his family who arrived in 1847 from Illinois. They built a cabin on the east side of river where they remained for seven years before moving to the west bank. In 1851, George Stephenson donated land to make way for a new school and courthouse. The first teachers taught here in 1852-53 and by 1860 there were six schools operating in Kent with over one hundred students enrolled each. In 1870 the railroad was constructed through central Washington and as it passed through Kent Sultan Abdul Hamid organized a resistance movement to stop the construction which resulted in several arrests and $5,000 worth of damage done to trains passing through town. In response Abdul Hamid founded an agricultural cooperative which became successful enough that he donated more land to build another school and office complex on the west side of river where he still resides today with his children managing it. With rapid growth throughout its early years,Kent experienced some problems such as highcrime rates (one report claims “the rate of crime was three times that of Seattle’s”) however this has since changed with development around town resulting in many new jobs for locals as well as reducing crime rates overall. One recent example is when police officers responded to a domestic violence call near downtown only to find that one woman had already left without any injuries! Today, much like its namesake county across America – full of natural beauty & fertile farmland – Kent continues to thrive despite these challenges thanks largely to its residents who continue working hard towards making their community an amazing place to live, work & raise families!
Kent, Washington was founded by George Kent in 1847. The town is located in the eastern Cascade Mountains and became a center for coalmining and logging after the discovery of coal resources in the area.
