Kent, Washington is located in the north-central region of the United States and is bordered by Oregon to the east, Nevada to the west, and Idaho to the south. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. The area that now makes up Kent was first settled by Native Americans in the early 19th century. In 1851, it became part of what is now Clark County, Utah. In 1907, it became part of Washoe County, Nevada. On January 1st, 1909, it became a town in Whatcom County, Washington. It has since annexed other nearby towns and villages: Maple Valley on February 17th 2000; North Bend on March 15th 2006; Anacortes on April 11th 2009; Gig Harbor on May 25th 2013 and Everett on July 22nd 2014. The history of Kent begins with its location as an Indian trading post near present day Anacortes on Puget Sound. Early settlers were attracted to this natural harbor due to its proximity to rich mineral resources and its mild climate for shipbuilding and fishing. By 1850 there were about 50 people living in what is now Kent when gold was discovered in southeastern Washington Territory along the Columbia River Gorge. Mining operations continued until 1865 when most of eastern Washington got involved in a bitter land dispute with California over ownership of some mountains that lay between them and Sacramento Lake Erie (now Lake Oroville). Settlement began anew around 1880 with many new arrivals from British Columbia who had come through Seattle looking for work at mines near Gold Rushtown (later called Mount Vernon). Later arrivals included Norwegian immigrants who worked in logging camps until 1902 when they started building their own town here which they named Nye after Norway’s Prime Minister at that time – Jonas Nye Pedersen (1862-1927). As more families moved into Nye during these years more schools were needed so a school district was organized which eventually led to Kent becoming one of Washoe County’s original nine townships (along with Anacortes) on November 3rd 1903 under direction from county supervisor John Waddell(1861-1948). At first all local residents paid property taxes but this changed when a fire destroyed much of what used to be downtown core during 1906-07 winter according to city historian Norma Eisler(1970), perhaps because too much money had been spent building churches instead of public works such as sidewalks or streetlights? On October 9th 1912 voters approved an act creating King George Sound Borough which unified all six township municipalities within Washoe County into one entity under state control although village status would continue until 1959! With little else goingon outside town limits except for agricultural production any growth came slowly as services like grocery stores arrived only after World War II while major highways bypassed town altogether until 1960 when Interstate 5 replaced Senate Street! In 1970 things took another turn as downtown core burned down again apparently because someone left a campfire burning right near Main Street entrance! This time around however everyone did respond quickly including firefighters using hoses from their cars parked across Monument Avenue just past City Hall! Afterward Mayor Mervyn Weiser ordered all businesses closed so that arson investigators could look into what happened! A few weeks later another attack occurred when rocks were thrown through windows at several businesses next door! No injuries resulted but vandalism increased thereafter leading Weiser to call for tighter controls over townspeople’s access to fireworks which he thought might have been responsible A series of fires broke out throughout 1978 destroying many homes/businesses along US 101 corridor connecting Kent with Everett before finally being brought under control by officers from Federal Highway Patrol detachment “Bulldog Unit” responding specifically thereto based upon information received concerning serious arsonist activity taking place within certain areas adjacent thereto!! One officer noted “It appears we are dealing with something here beyond our jurisdiction” !! Today there are still occasional fires starting inside townlimits but overall conditions are much more controlled than they once were especially given recent technological advancements including video cameras positioned strategically throughout town limits 24/7!!!
Kent, Washington was first settled in 1792. It became a town in 1854 and was named for General George Kent, a Union officer who fought in the American Civil War. The town had a population of about 200 people when it was first founded.
