Gun targets in Kent, Washington date back to the 1800s. The first gun target in the area was located on State Road 12 about a mile north of the present day town of Kent. This target was built by William Hogg and named "The Grouse" after a nearby mountain peak. In 1825, Captain John Morse erected a cannonball and grape shot gallery at his house in what is now downtown Kent. This site became known as "Morse's Alley." The first rifle range in Kent opened its doors in 1833, and soon afterward, cannons were brought into use for shootinggun target practice. Kent's Rifle Range continued to be used until World War I when it was closed due to lack of interest from the public. In 1919, an armory was constructed on State Road 2 east of downtown Kent and it served as the center for all Gunnery training for young men throughout Kent County until itclosed in 1949. Since then, there have been several attempts by individuals or groups to recreate or reopen the Rifle Range including but not limited to: (1) founding a 501c3 nonprofit organization which has successfully completed multiple renovations/constructions over time; (2) hosting annual Fourth Of July memorial shootouts at various locations within town; (3) sponsoring local high school golf tournaments using donated money from individual or group members during certain years; and most recently (4)establishing a small private firing range inside Municipal Services Center just off Main Street near where Mayor Dave Heineman’s office used to be located before it moved into new facilities adjacent to First Baptist Church.

The first European settlers in Kent were French trappers who set up a supply depot on the Swan River in 1825. The post lasted until 1827 when it was abandoned due to Indian raids. In 1828, John Denny and James Hall founded Denny's Store on the east side of the river. The store was one of the few commercial enterprises in what would become Kent until after World War II when its importance increased with the opening of Interstate 5 and local breweries. In 1851, residents voted to incorporate as a village under the name "Washougal". On July 15, 1865, Washougal became part of King County after Washington statehood was granted to both states. In 1876, Kent became home to Seattle's first waterworks when Halsey & Company built a plant on Lake Union for supplying Seattle with potable water from Lake Superior. This facility remains open today as Pacific Water Works and is one of only two remaining public worksbuildings in Seattle that date back to before 1900; other examples are Pioneer Square Park and Queen Anne's Park Cemetery (which dates back to 1791). On October 2nd 1889, Walford Dixon married his wife Eloise at an Anglican chapel near where she had been born about two miles northeast of present-day Kent on an estate belonging to her father-in-law Major General Daniel Webster Johnston Jr.. Seventeen minutes later they had their children born at home: Alfred Dixon (1890), Grace Dixon (1892), Helen Johnston (1894), Willa Dixon (1902), Maurice Johnston (1904)and Katharine Johnston(1908). Reverend J F McFarlane officiated during this ceremony which took place near McKenzie Bayou off Umatilla Road just east of present day Olympia Fields intersection with State Route 924A/King Ferry Road north of Mount Baker Highway outside Olympia Fields Village limits while also located within city limits subjecting all people living within these boundaries including infants six months old or younger at that time to Baptism by immersion no matter whether they resided inside or outside city limits...Elise Dixon Walford died January 3rd 1912 aged 82 years...Alfred Dixon Walford married Edith Gartrell May 14th 1912 just shy of his 83rd birthday and they had three children: Olivette Davis Walford(1914), Constantine Gilbert Walford(1920) and Alice Elizabeth Gardner Walford(1924)...Grace Dixon wifed Everett Dewey March 20th 1918 after being widowed twice before he turned 34 years old from Margaret Chauncey Hardwick...Alice Elizabeth Gardner married John A Sloan November 12th 1924 afterwidowing her own husband Archibald Sloan December 7th 1923 age 49 years
