The first European settlers in what is now Kent were farmers who came up the Cascades in search of new land to farm. They named their land after their local river: Kent Creek was flowing through this region when they settled there in 1851. By 1870, about one-third of all people living in Snohomish County were residents of the city of Seattle; by 1980, only 10 percent remained there. The growth and development of Seattle has led to increased demand for water resources throughout King County; accordingly, construction on reservoirs and other water systems has taken place throughout Kent over the years. One such project was an addition to Glen Canyon Dam which completed in 1964; since then, Kent has seen significant hydropower production as a result (see Listing #4). Today, Kent remains important both economically and culturally due to its rich history and cultural attractions: it features two museums - one focusing on art history and one concentrating on Native American culture - as well as several restaurants and nightlife options including live music venues and performance halls throughout the year.
