Kent, Washington was founded in 1792 by George Washington and his first wife, Martha. The town is located on the Spokane River about 15 miles west of Spokane. In 1875, the town became a census-designated place (CDP). It has a population of over 9,000 people today. The region that now includes Kent was first inhabited by the Quapaw Tribe of Indians. The area was surveyed by Captain John Wesley Powell in 1806 and named for General George Kent, an American general who had fought in the Mexican War and also served as Governor of Florida. In 1827, Captain James Kapp discovered gold along the lower Spokane River and decided to establish a Donation Land Claim there. The townsite was platted in 1829 by Captain Ebenezer Fenton under the name of "Eagle Butte." In 1861, when Washoe County was organized, it included portions of what are now eastern Yakima and southcentral Grays Harbor counties. In 1863, when Snohomish County was organized, it included all but part of what are now western Pierce and northern Thurston counties. On January 1, 1865 – three years after the Civil War ended – Washoe County merged with Grays Harbor County to form King county. On July 1st 1898 – more than 60 years after its founding – Kent attained city status pursuant to an Act of Congress recognizing new cities having been consolidated from other jurisdictions within King county since 1897–98. Today's downtown core is anchored by two shopping malls: One anchors Nordstrom Rack and Macy's; while another anchors Sears Holdings which opened its first store in 1988 inside Microsoft's former Seattle campus adjacent to CenturyLink Field (the home field for Seattle Sounders FC) prior to their move to their current stadium across Lake Union from Safeco Field). Other major retailers include JCPenney (originally Sears), Home Depot/ Lowes Furniture stores as well as REI outposts including several outdoor camping areas around both lakeside communities hosting events such as fishing tournaments during summer months; several diners/cafés near key transportation hubs like Interstate 5 or Southcenter mall; four professional sports teams playing at nearby stadiums: Seahawks (seasons ticket holders only); Mariners (season tickets available year-round); Sounders FCenoise; while smaller businesses provide services such as plumbing/landscaping/homespun retailing etc.; plus nearly 150 residences providing affordable housing opportunities throughout entire community with nearby schools serving our needs including 4 elementary schools - grades PK-4 - each with a full day kindergarten program offering PreKindergarten through 3rd grade instruction; our own library containing approximately 100 titles covering every subject imaginable from history through literature up until college level courses
