Kent, Washington is a small town in central Washington State located on the banks of the Columbia River. The population was 3,059 at the 2010 census. In 1856, when Congress passed the Reservation Act creating Walla Walla County for Native Americans, it also provided for a town to be established in this newly formed county east of Wenatchee on the Columbia River. This town was called Lewiston and served as itscentral business district until 1907 when it became Wenatchee. Lewiston's growth followed a typical Northwest wagon train pattern: pioneers arrived with their families in large groups and began trading goods they had acquired while traveling through Oregon or Idaho into what is now California before heading north to explore new territory. By 1840, Lewiston had an estimated population of 1,000 people and by 1860 it had grown to 2,500 residents. As more settlers started arrive from eastern Canada via Seattle or Tacoma during this time period, Lewiston developed into a major hub for trade with those areas as well as becoming known as "the center of Puget Sound." In 1876-77 Lewiston voters approved annexation by Wenatchee which made it the second city in Washington state after Everett (then only an agricultural center). In 1915-16 Lewiston voters passed an ordinance annexing nearby Renton which made it another city within Washington state after Spokane (then only a rural community). In 1924-25 Voters passed an ordinance annexing adjacent Tumwater which made it yet another city within Washington state after Olympia (then only farmland). These annexations brought about increased development pressures on both cities due to their size;Lewiston experienced rapid growth beginning around 1930 while Tumwater slowly stabilized over time despite occasional surges in population caused by events such as World War II or floods along the river bedåThis continued trend until 1959 when both cities were merged into one municipality name—Wenatchee–Tacoma
