Harriman had been interested in creating a large park that would serve as a community center and cultural area for his constituents living near Walla Walla River on the east side of Seattle proper. He believed that this area could use more than just open space for recreation; he wanted it to be an educational center where people could learn about their surroundings and connect with each other through education programs such as summer camps or historical walksabouts. The park was dedicated on October 25th, 1916, four years after Harriman's death. Kent, Washington is a small town located in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 553 at the 2000 census. It is bordered by Marquette to the north, Saginaw to the east, Bay City to the south, and Iron County to the west. The town was founded in 1824 by Captain John Fenton and his family. It became a part of Washtenaw County in 1837. In 1907, Kent merged with neighboring towns of Bay City and Saginaw to form one large community known as Kent-Saginaw Township. The township was dissolved in 1973 and its assets were auctioned off for economic development purposes. The history of Kent begins with Captain John Fenton who settled there in 1824. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Fenton's Landing." He operated a ferry service from his landing until 1828 when he sold it to George Appleton for $200USD$. The first store opened in 1830 on East Main Street. By 1840, there were five stores open along Main Street including two taverns owned by John Ladd and James McMillin which continued operation until they closed around 1870 due to high competition from other businesses within the town limits such as Grange Hall Tavern (now an art gallery) and Adam & Sons Brewery (now defunct). In 1837, Washtenaw County was created out of portion of Detroit Territory which included all of Michigan except Upper Peninsula including Kent which remained under Detroit Territory jurisdiction. This event led to another store opening up called "The Grosse Pointe Store" on South Union Avenue within two years after county lines were drawn between Washtenaw County and Iron Counties although this store failed because it did not have any sales taxes collected from residents within that area! In 1840, land was donated by David Denny for $1USD per acre for a new courthouse complex that would be used primarily for civil courts with courtrooms being built on either side of jail cells so defendants could better hear their case! A school also opened up at this time called "Denny's School" which would later become Western High School! In 1845, Colonel Isaac Stevens purchased 1/4 mile northeast of where present day Main Street meets East Union Avenue fromDavid Denny for $2USD per acre plus interest! This location became known as Stevens Field because it served as a stop on Stevens' Butterfield Line Railroad that ran between Lansing and Chicago!! Stevens also donated some land further southwest along East Union Avenue near today's Park Road before selling that parcel back to Denny in 1850 for $4USD per acre!! After several changes about site over time due mostly due to various malaria outbreaks that hit Michigan during this time Period!, The current site where main street meets east union avenue became permanent following an auction held in 1865!!! Due largely to transportation problems caused by changing ice cover levels along I-94 during winter times!, A post office called "KENTPost Office" began operations at this address in 1898!! By 1930, only three residences still remain within downtown Kent but those homes are now part of the historical district known as Old Town! IRAQ: KENT Uprising 1948 - 1953 When World War II began less than 2 years after America entered into war against Japan through Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 (), many young people decided they wantedTo help their country fight while still living close enough home(s)to see action or participate directly…..Many enlisted early especially men just like my father who had completed 4 years collegiate engineering courses at Michigand State Normal University (MSU), Flint Hills outside Topeka KS…..After Pearl Harbor our college friends quickly organized themselves into patriotic military units called “Fish” Patrolrons……Dad served honorably through most every phase through most wartime deployment including Leyte Gulf campaign then Okinawa Campaign; finally VE Day Victory parade May 15 1945……………. After discharge from army he returned home Dec 12 1946 having been discharged 3rd star general…………..None Of Dad’s fellow “Fish” Patrollers ever got medals or recognition postwar………………………What Our Dad GotWWII – Memories From My Father
