Kent is a small town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-Eagle Lake area. The first people to live in what is now Kent were Creeks who came from British Columbia in 1847. They built a teepee on the east side of the creek and hunted game there until white men started arriving in 1853. In 1865, General Lew Wallace's army passed through this area during its march through Washington state and stopped near the present day village on the edge of Thurston County. A detachment of American troops camped here for two nights before moving on to Fort Snelling farther upriver. In 1870, a post office was established at Kent with Wm Fenton as Postmaster. The first settlers arrived from Illinois and named their new community after Captain John Crampton (1793-1871), an officer with General Ulysses S. Grant's forces during the Mexican–American War who had fought at Palo Alto and Monterrey Pass. He had been stranded by bad weather near Goldendale while seeking help for his family when he discovered gold nuggets down river instead of overland as expected and returned to find his wagonload of treasure looted by Mexican soldiers just south of Seattle! The citizens contributed money towards building a storehouse andCache Supply Depot on Burley Hill opposite town limits today; it opened February 13th, 1872). In 1902, Kentsville was annexed into Kent so that it could have more land to raise crops and support its own government because much of what lay between Kentsville and Thurston Countyskeeter Creek (now called Morena Boulevard) was wilderness forest with no access or development available for many years following European settlement hereabouts which led some people to believe that this region was "uninhabitable". After annexation however local farmers began clearing land for agriculture including sugar beets, cottonseedbush beans, wheat germ oilseeds etc., exposing hardwood forests along stream banks making these lands accessible for development beginning in earnest about 1925 when Olympia saw commercial possibilities potential HERE! This resulted in lumber mills being constructed along Morena Boulevard starting about 1926 becoming one factor leading to rapid growth hereabouts culminating by 1940 when all but one logging mill closed due mainly to competition from aluminum smelters located elsewhere across Puget Sound where prices paid per ton were only 30 cents cheaper than those charged hereabouts! When World War II erupted I remember my father telling me how he managed not only to get work as an electrician even though he couldn't read or write but also got $5 a week extra payment plus overtime because they didn't use English words like "man" or "woman" back then we used specific terms like " Mister" or " Missie" you would say them like that back then too I think maybe our language changed since then?
