Kent, Washington is a small town in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Deschutes River, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Seattle and 30 miles (48 km) east of Portland. The town was founded in 1853 by fur traders and pioneers who were looking for a location to establish their new home after leaving Oregon's Cascades region. The name Kent comes from an English word meaning "downstream." The first settler in Kent was James Alder, who arrived in 1853 and built his house on the site of present-day downtown Kent. In 1870, John Wesley Powell set out from Seattle with his three sons to explore the Snake River Valley and its potential as a wagon route between Puget Sound and California. They rode overland through what is now Kent before descending into Deschutes River valley nearpresent-day downtown Kent for water supplies and trade goods with local Native Americans. After reaching Beaver Lake near present day Auburn, they continued downriver for six days before turning back due to lack of food stocks at the nearby confluence withthe Columbia River where they had hoped to find goldfields worth exploring further downriver but found only shoals of salmon instead In 1872, Orville Wright flew his first airplane over Cascades National Park while on his way back from Mount Rainier National Park That same year, George Stephenson erected a telegraph line from Tacoma to Spokane using horse power when no other means existed to do so at that time

In 1886, the village incorporated as Kenton Township under the name of "Athletic Club." In 1907, Kent annexd to Wenatchee City and changed its name to Kenton-Wenatchee. At that time it had an estimated population of 2,000 people but only 1,500 residents lived there at its peak due to subdivisions being developed throughout Wenatchee city limits. In 1951-1957 when Wenatchee-Douglas Metro area expanded westward into Richland County,Kent annexed back into Wenatchee City again because its citizens wanted more land within their city limits grocery store/gas station: gas station also Historic building on Main Street now used as library In 1915 voters approved $2 million for planning and construction of the new Central High School which would become one of the most important civic institutions in town after incorporation as Kenton Township (later renamed Kenton).
