Kent was founded in 1857 by Captain Bradford Kirkpatrick and his wife, Lillie. The town was named after Captain Kirkpatrick's father, George H. Kent who had been killed in the Mexican-American War. The first store in the town was built on the corner of Main and Second Streets. In 1872, a post office was established in Kent and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1893, the Washington State Legislature authorized a state fair to be held at the old county courthouse which would become known as the "Kent Fair." That fair is still being held every year to this day at the old courthouse square near downtown Kent.
