McKay and his wife Nancy moved from Missouri to what is nowKent, Washington after their home state became part of Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. They were welcomed by local farmers and ranchers who saw in them an opportunity to fill a need for men who could help farm land and protect themselves from Union troops seeking to take away their property or harm their interests. TheMcKay family quickly established themselves in this new community and soon began developing businesses such as a grocery store, steak house, flour mill, saddlery shop, post office and schoolhouse. The town's early years were difficult due to lack of access to water resources that were essential for growing crops or brewing beer; however, through hard work and perseverance they achieved success both locally and nationally. The McKay family would stay in Kent until 1865 when they relocated again due to racial tensions between white Americans and African Americans living in the area at that time. This move came about because General Ulysses S Grant had ordered all black soldiers out of Kentucky following the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1st 1863. With few other options open to them at that time, the McKay family decided they would have to leave their home state if they wanted continued access to education opportunities for their children- something that they’d otherwise miss out on while living outsideof Lexington Kentucky where African Americans were not allowed any form of education beyond elementary level until 1938! It wasn’t long before locals began organizing into committees– some led by farmers like John Wiegand–to secure more reliable water sources so that agriculture could continue functioning without havingTo face subsistence farming conditions just outsidethe city limits; also many people did Not want black people living next door (or taking advantage of housing vouchers available through government programs) . finally enough people realized there might be benefits/opportunities here too!!! Kent was founded in 1792 by the brothers Kent and Joseph Priestley. The town was named after Joseph Priestley, who had traveled to the area to study natural resources. In 1847, when Washington state became a United States territory, Kent remained part of the new state. In 1861, when Washington State was divided into two parts, Kent remained in the eastern half of the new state. When that part of Washington became known as Oregon in 1859, all of Kent went with it. In 1976, when Oregon became a state again, Kent rejoined Washington.
