They continued growing apples until World War II when they stopped growing apples because there wasn't enough acreage available for them to do so anymore. Today, Main Street remains one of only a few streets remaining in town that still carry names from early days such as Bancroft Avenue (now called West Allis Avenue), Arlington Road (now called Swallow Lane), Fenton Road (now called Haggerty Way) and Apple Blossom Drive (now named Courtlandt Drive). Another notable street name is Southgate which was once Highway 99A but has been renamed several times including Apple Blossom Way/Southgate Boulevard post-fire 2006; Apple Blossom Path/Southgate Boulevard between Butte Creek Rd./Sparrowhawk Dr./Apple Valley Blvd./Apple Valley Rd./Lake St.; Northgate which formerly served as US 98E between US 98W at US 96N and SR 527 east side; Northgate Ave./US 98E between SR 527 east side & RD 327 north side; Eastside which serves as an interconnecting road between I-5 southbound & I-5 westbound; Park View which served as part of SR 527 east side before it was rerouted south onto RD 327 following I-5

Nowadays there are three hospitals located within one mile of town: University Medical Center (UMC), Seattle Children's Hospital (SCH) and Harborview Medical Center (HMC).
Kent, Washington was founded in 1851 by surveyors named John D. Rockefeller and James Wanless. The town was named for the county in which it was located, Kent County, Ohio. It began as a small farming community with six stores and one school. By 1861, the population had grown to seventy-six residents and two churches. The first store, Grains & Grits, opened in 1866. In 1892, the town became an incorporated village when all of its citizens joined together to form a municipality. In 1916, the name of the town was changed to Kentwood after Dr. Ira Kempton's death.
