Kent, Washington is a small town in the Yakima Valley of the state of Washington. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Yakima County seat, Olympia. The first post office in Kent was established on December 12, 1847, and was named for George Kent, an early settler. In 1892, the town voted to change its name to Olympia after then-Gov. John Alexander Olmsted recommended it as a way to show support for local farmers who were struggling during that time of recession. The name stuck and today's residents are known as "Olympians". In recent years, growth has been modest but steady; nonetheless, the population continues to grow rapidly due to new housing developments coming online or being built nearby such as Trump International Hotel & Tower which opened in 2006 adjacent to Interstate 5 near downtown Olympia; partially funded by developer Abe Foxman along with other private developers through tax breaks given by Govs Christy Gregoire & Jay Inslee A major development project underway currently is called "Lilypad" with over 4 million sq ft of development across 8 blocks including 366 new residential units with street parking available onsite

When Amtrak began operations through Seattle on May 1st 1970 it connected downtown Seattle with all points west via Interstate 5; however Amtrak discontinued service along I-5 south of Seattle on September 30th 1990 citing budget constraints following privatizations within Amtrak USA Incorporated that year
Kent was founded in 1859 by Captain George Kent and his wife, Anna. The town was named for Colonel (Sir) John C. Kent, a British Army officer who served in the Mexican-American War and on the Oregon Trail. The first store in town was built on the site of what is now the town square. In 1870, Captain Kent donated land to build a school district. The first school building, which still stands today, was used until 1907 when it became part of the new School District No. 2 which moved to its current location at 309 S Columbine Ave in 1911. In 1912, Captain Kent donated another piece of land to establish a public library that still stands today at 311 S Columbine Ave. In 1916, Captain Kent donated money to start the first high school inKent and it is currently known as Western Washington University High School.
