Kent, Washington was the first community in what is now Pierce County. The settlement was located near the mouth of the Snake River and was founded by David Kent and his wife Phebe about 1834. The town site had been purchased from Chief Seattle by the local fur traders in 1824. The first post office in Kent opened on November 5, 1835. It served as a stop along the Oregon Trail. In 1837, the United States Post Office Department built a small building at the junction of State Route 99 and US-99 to serve as a public warehouse for mail deliveries. The Warehouse Annex still stands today and is used as an event space for various events in central Kent. In 1850, the U.S. government created King's Valley Ranch west of present day Kent to provide land for farmers who wished to purchase land west ofSeattle Ridge Road and south of Mount Rainier National Park boundaries. A road called Indian roads connected this ranch with other ranches east of Seattle Ridge Road during this time period; however, no evidence remains that these routes ever crossed each other or that any trade took place between these farms and those in King's Valley Ranch beyond delivering goods to their owners’ homes/ businesses/ livestock etc.? By 1860, both residents of King's Valley Ranch east of Seattle Ridge Road (including present day Kent) as well as those living west of Seattle Ridge Road were beginning to experience problems withotes goldmining operations being started on nearby hillsides; therefore, they decided it would be more practical if they all moved closer together into one town? This led to the founding date for what is now known as "Kent" – November 5th1835 – although there may have been earlier towns established within this area such as "Cullivant" which likely functioned similarly before its formal incorporation into Kent on November 5th century 05? After some deliberation among its citizens, it was decided that “The new town should be named after Mr David Kents son” so when he married Phebe Noyes in 1840 she became Mrs David Kents daughter? After her death in 1850 her husband remarried Phebe Cavanaugh also referred to hereinbelow under "Mrs David Kents daughter".
