Kent, Washington is a small town located in the Yakima Valley of north-central Washington. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. The community is named after John C. Kent, an early settler and one of the first people to live in the area. The town began as a small cluster of log cabins on land that now comprises part of what is known as Kent State University's campus. It grew slowly until World War II when it exploded in size due to military recruitment. By 1950, nearly all of the original buildings had been erected and the population had reached 901 individuals. In 1961, construction began on what would become Kent State University's first building and it opened its doors to students and staff on October 1, 1961. Today, Kent remains a tiny community with a modest population growth rate; however, its economy remains heavily dependent on education and research at KSU - both essential components of its identity as a university town. The town also participates actively in local civic life through various organizations such as the Knights of Columbus Council and Rotary Club International/Kent County Federation (KCF). Additionally, there is a strong spirit of cooperation among residents which has led to several successes including creating an award-winning agricultural program for KSU's Agricultural Sciences Department (ASD), developing new ways for schoolchildren to learn about science and math during their lunch hour (!), renovated much of downtown between 2005-2007 using public funds and proceeds from fundraising events held throughout the year (most notably Christmas Eve),and initiating major renovations to two churches - one built by donation from private individuals while another was renovated with assistance from state government funds just prior to its reopening this past fall as part of celebrations marking 100 years since pastor J[ohn] H[enry] Wright founded his church hereabouts! These projects demonstrate not only how successful Town Hall can be when used by all members collectively but also how Town Hall functions as an engine for community development - something we hope will continue into future decades!

Kent, Washington is a town in Clark County, Washington, United States. The population was 4,594 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County. As of the 2010 census, Kent had a total area of 33.7 square miles (87.5 km2), including 21.8 square miles (60 km2) of water and 0.9 square mile (3 km2) of land.[1] The first Europeans to visit Kent were traders from Quebec in 1607 who named it for Sir John Kent who had died in 1598 on his journey from England to North America via Panama City[2]. The first permanent settler in what became Kent was David Mynors who arrived in 1847[3]. In 1856 the town site was purchased by Moses Morse and others from David Mynors for $1,000 cash[4], making it one of the earliest towns in Clark County.[5][6][7] The present day buildings date back to 1857 when a school and store were built on an existing farmstead by George Higgs and others[8]. In 1870–71 George Higgs donated land for a courthouse which now stands as part of downtown Kent[9]. A post office called Mount Vernon was established in 1865,[10] but it closed operations due to financial difficulties in 1869[11] and was replaced by the current post office which opened its doors on July 1, 1898[12]. The city manager position became vacant after Harry Fenton resigned effective February 1st, 2006 because he did not have enough experience to fill the role full-time; however he continued as acting city manager until May 25th2006 when Mayor Dave Meyer took over as mayor effective June 3rd 2006 [13][14][15] After months of deliberations between elected officials and members of the business community regarding an ordinance that would allow night time gambling within limits set forth by regulations passed by the state legislature majority party while they represented all residents regardless of residency status; Mayor Meyer announced that he would veto any such ordinance because he felt that this type gambling should be allowed only if there are specific exemptions granted through negotiation with lawmakers who represent residents interests rather than just those benefitting from gambling activities within their district boundaries [16]; He went on to say "I don't think you're going to see anything happening anytime soon"[17]; This sets off an uproar among some citizens as many feel that zoning regulations specifically prohibiting night gambling are unconstitutional because they discriminate against people based upon their residency status; This issue will continue to be debated throughout 2011 with no clear resolution forthcoming
Kent, Washington was first settled by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1806. The town was named for Captain Nicholas Kent of the team that explored the Columbia River. In 1847, Kent became the seat of Thurston County.
