The Kennewick Arsenal Corporation was a munitions production and research center that operated from 1867 until its closure in 1974. It was located on the north side of town across the Spokane River from what is now Kennewick High School. The first ammunition production plant in Kennewick was built by George Stephenson and Company on the north side of town in 1867. The plant produced ordnance for use in the American Civil War including cannons and rifle rounds. In 1974, due toesy of budget cuts, the company closed its doors after 54 years of operation. Today there is no evidence remaining of either the Stephenson Plant or any other Ammunition Production Centers during the early 21st century; however reports suggest that some artifacts associated with this period may yet be discovered and excavated around Kennewick Arsenal site if they are ever reclaimed by local residents or developers interested in preserving such an important part of their town's history.
