In 1872 John Davenport moved his family to what isnow Kennewick from Anacortes on Elliott Bay outside Seattle after purchasing 640 acres (24 hectares) of land east of present-day Seattle from Juan José Cámpora y Valdivia for $5 per acre ($2 million today). That same year saw the construction of a completionist hotel on Union Street known then as Palace Hotel which still stands today - one of only a few examples remaining from that period occupying significance inside or outside the city limits today In 1907 Everett Sargent purchased 6 miles (10 km) northeast of downtown Kennewick along State Route 172 for $1 per acre ($0.50 million today). Development continued apace until 2008 when energy prices crashed causing many layoffs among developers followed by budget cuts leading to foreclosure amongst those still involved .
