Some of these men decided to settle down near what is now Kennewick because it had good access to water resources and easy transportation from nearby cities like Seattle and Tacoma. John C. Kennewik’s successors continued farming this area until about 1910 when oil discoveries began to make Western Washington an important source of revenue for companies like Shell Oil Company and Puget Sound Navigation Company. This precipitated a rapid growth in industry and commerce around Kennewick, which helped drive its population up from 1,000 residents in 1907 to more than 11,000 today! In addition to its economic significance, Kennwick also has been home to some very famous people over the years – including football great Bobby Layne; movie star Gloria Swanson; author Ken Follett; current Mayor Steve Novak; as well as numerous local dignitaries such as US Senator Slade Gorton and Governor Chris Gregoire!
