After several years of construction, the university arrived in 1911; thanks also to donations from local businesses and citizens. In 1865, when Kennedale's old home became available for use as a school building, he donated it to the townspeople for use as such; it still stands today. In 1870, another school building was erected on what is now First Avenue NE; this one served until 1928 when it burned down. In 1907, when Kennedale's grandson Daniel died suddenly at age 26 years old without any children to take care of him, local citizens organized into a committee to raise money to bury him and provide funeral expenses with proceeds going to charity; they also elected Daniel's nephew Harry Haggerty as his successor and guardian ad litem forDaniel's estate. In 1922 an addition to the original white store building were two blacksmiths' shops which served as classrooms until 1957; later these workshops were used by Youth Services Department until 1967 when they closed because of budget cuts caused by then-President Richard Nixon's Executive Order "Equal Employment Opportunity." The current courthouse was built between 1951 and 1955 using funds provided by Mrs.[Unidentified name] McKay through her organization "Kennedy Cancer Research Foundation".
