Kennewick is located on the shore of Lake Washington and between Seattle and Bellevue to the east and south. It is the county seat for King County. The first permanent settler in Kennewick was Captain James Cook in 1792. The town was founded on December 4, 1851 by Colonel John C. Fremont and his wife Abigail Dodge Fremont with land purchased from the Yakima Nation under a Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Alliance. The town has been known variously as "Cockburn's Landing," "Fremont's Settlement," or "Fremont's Town." As a result of its location on Lake Washington, Kennewick became an important commercial center during the early 19th century; it prospered as a port for timber exports, ferry service toSeattleandBellevue,andthe construction of wharfage and other infrastructure for shipbuilding and fishing. It also experienced heavy population growth due to waves of immigration in the late 19th century: Italians (1915-1920), Poles (1920-1930), Japanese (1930-1945), Koreans (1945-1980), Vietnamese (1979-1990) among others. In spite of these factors, however, Kennewick declined after World War II until dramatic increases in population growth following passage of Proposition 8 in 2002 led to revitalization efforts that have seen significant progress since then including new development along Highway 410 which forms much of Kennewick's eastern border; renovation/new construction around Pioneer Square; increased access to local public services including libraries and parks; increasing use by students at UW–Kingston satellite campuses; and recent job postings across many industries including health care technology companies
Kennewick was founded in 1792 by the group of men who had been expelled from British Columbia. The town was named after George Washington, who had helped to establish it as a fur- trading post. When the area was first explored by Europeans, they found it uninhabitable and abandoned. However, over time, the population of Kennewick grew and began to develop its own economy. By 1853, the town had grown so large that it incorporated as a full municipality. In 1920, Kennewick became an official U.S. city and retains this status to this day.
