By 1847, most of present day Kennewick had been developed as a town when John Wesley Stevens opened up a store at 4th Street and H St., serving as its first postmaster. Stevens continued to serve as postmaster until 1888 when he moved to Tacoma. During World War II, many Japanese Americans living in Seattle were interned here until they were eventually released under terms of the surrender agreement that ended World War II. Some residents of Kennewick who wanted to remainIn Seattle took up arms against the Japanese occupiers during this time period known as The Battle for Seattle. This battle resulted in over 50 casualties on both sides and was one of the bloodiest clashes between American forces and Japan since Pearl Harbor
