The university grew rapidly during World War I and World War II due to war-time research opportunities offered by then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs such as Lend-Lease and Social Security; however, enrollment peaked at 20,000 students in 1948 and fell slowly until 1960 when it reached 9,500 students again before dropping back below 10,000 again by 1988 when it hit 8,700 students once again according to UW website (universityofwashington). The growth that took place during these years also resulted in increased traffic around town which caused road widening problems that continue today albeit lessened significantly since Interstate 5 was constructed nearby between 1965 and 1970 cutting off much needed access into town center from Interstate 90/I–5 behind it Kennewick entered into full commercialization with new shopping malls opening up throughout the 1980s including one right outside the Amtrak station called "Mall at Kenmore" which remains open today although now mainly used for office space During this time there also began large construction projects such as Westlake Center which would eventually become Home Depot while other developments like Gateway Mall went largely unbuilt or were sold off after becoming unprofitable . These developments spawned many local businesses which continue to operate today even though downtown has experienced significant revitalization over recent decades primarily through retail development . Kennewick was first settled by the Yakama in the early 1800s. By 1907, there were over 200 people living in Kennewick. The town was named after General George Washington, who had been born in nearby Alexandria, Virginia. In 1911, the U.S. Post Office moved from Seattle to Kennewick and it became an incorporated town on December 1 of that year. The population of Kennewick increased rapidly during World War II due to the war effort and new housing construction; by 1945, it had reached over 1,000 people. After the war ended, life gradually slowed down until a major economic downturn hit Kennewick in the early 2000s. Today, the town is largely ceremonial with few residents remaining
