Kennewick, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 56,569 at the 2010 census. The city occupies part of the south-central area of the county and is bordered to the east by Auburn and to the west by Renton. Kennewick lies on the Spokane River and offers a number of recreational opportunities such as swimming, fishing, boating and hiking. The history of Kennewick goes back to 1853 when it was named for General George Custer who had died in action two years earlier in what would become known as the Battle of Little Bighorn. In 1886 when Congress annexed most of King County they also included Kennewick in its boundaries making it one of their new municipalities. It wasn't until 1912 that what today is called downtown started to take shape with construction beginning on what would eventually become known as Government House Square. This lone building served as both a courthouse for local government and an administrative center for all aspects of town life including firefighting and law enforcement until it burned down in 1938. By 1933 Kennewick had some semblance of a police department but no streetlights or sidewalks were present so residents used logs from local mills which they built around their homes for public lighting. By 1945 there were enough lights installed along main streets to make nightlife possible without fear of being robbed or mugged while out shopping at night! In 1951 Mayor Jock Mahoney designated Government House Square as the site where Jeff Goldblum Would first appear onscreen in "The Godfather". Today this plaza remains dedicated to education with several large classrooms used by Northwest Schools Districts during morning classes before school starts up again across town! Kennewick is a small town located in the state of Washington, United States. The population was 7,839 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous incorporated community in Washington after Seattle and the ninth most populous municipality in the United States. Kennewick is part of the Wenatchee-based Yakima County. The first permanent settler in Kennewick was James Cook who arrived on May 25, 1807 and claimed land along what would later be known as State Route 99W which he named "New Town." Cook's claim extended to present day Yakima River Valley and parts of what are now Thurston County and King County. In 1815, John McLaughlin established a homestead near present day Murdock Lake on Elliott Bay which became one of Kennewick's first commercial areas. In 1820, Russian immigrant Andrey Kuznetsov founded a farmstead at Nisqually Creek just east of downtown Kennewick with his wife Anna Khokhlova. From this place Kuznetsov began to export wheat from his farmstead to Russia and other countries throughout Northwest America including Alaska. In 1830, Englishman George Stephenson discovered coal seams near Wenatchee and leased them from Kuznetsov for $200 per acre! This initial discovery ignited growth in Wenatchee because it made possible an early version of streetcars running through town which helped improve communications between Wenatchee and nearby towns like Olympia, Lynden, North Bend, etc.. By 1865 there were over 1,000 people living in Kennewick with 350 businesses employing more than 1,500 people! Prior to Coal Mines opening up adjacent to Kaapana Post Office on December 5th 1861 by Wm Henson & Co., only a few hundred people lived hereabouts; however by 1870 their number had swollen above 2 thousand! An early form of communication for locals was local newspapers published intermittently starting about 1800 which detailed events happening around town or specific sub-towns such as that around Fort Vancouver or Jericho Hill during that time period also included images/views from various points within town limits shown as well as advertisements! However by 1860 these had all been discontinued due to high cost involved plus political correctness laws against advertising anything negative towards our “native” country USA while many Americans were still suffering through Civil War era conflict back home…hence today very few if any old fashioned local newspapers remain anymore anywhere within city limits... except maybe at historical sites where permission may be obtained
The Kennewick region was first settled by the Indian tribe the Spokane in the late 17th century. The area was part of the Northwest Territory until it became a state in 1889. The population growth and development of Kennewick during this time were significant, with many new businesses and homes being erected.
