After his exploration expedition reached within Canadian waters offof Puget Sound, Captain Vancouver returned to England pleased with his findings but also inspired to explore more land east of Canada. When he returned home in October 1793, Vancouver wrote: “I have explored this country unto its utmost bounds; I find no fewer than Forty Mile Head [sic], at least six or seven miles wide . . . excellent sites for a Fortification against all kinde Of Enemies”[1]. With these words from captain George Vancouver indicating that he had discovered new landmass east of Canada - albeit only partway - others quickly followed suit seeking access to this virgin soil which lay just beyond their frontiersmen’s horizonlines.[2] In 1796 Lieutenant John McLoughlin charted what is today known as Watertown Point on South Ferry Creek[3]. This point would later serve as a key location for expansion into what are now eastern Oregon and westernWashington due to its accessible water resources[4][5]. By 1800 both McLoughlin’s surveyor map[6]and an accompanying journal record illustrate how industry began developing along South Ferry Creek as settlers arrived looking for new lands westward:[7][8][9]. By 1801 there were over fifty farmers residing near South Ferry Creek,[10]and soon after two sawmills were built providing flour for local consumed[11],[12][13]. As early as 1805 news reached British traders stationed atthe mouth ofthe Columbia River about possible goldfields existin NorthAmerica eastof them [14](See Map 1).[15] Accordingly on January 14th page 12th copyof Order No 1/1805 listed “Oregon Gold Fields Claims District Within Our Limits” under General Orders then open for inspectionby Company Officers etc., Subsequent Changes being Mentioned Onpage 25(See Map 2)[16]). However it appears no such mines were found until later when Pierre Elliott Trudeau visited the region during his travels through Central America in 1858-59 bringing news about large deposits hidden beneathmountains northeastof Mexico City [17],[18]; unfortunately little else is known about these initial explorations other than they yielded little physical evidence asidefrom some rich gold veins however these also remain unconfirmed at this time! It wasn't till late 1850's when prospectors discovered huge amounts iron ore near where Coal Mining began soon afterwards becoming one major industry based outof Kennewick while steel production commenced nearby beginning in 1909.[19],[20]Today aluminum smelters continue operations adjacenttoSouth Ferry Creek forming an important component inthecommunity still struggling economically although increasing production ratesresultinginnewemployment Opportunitiesmany contributing factors underlying local economic problems

In addition, Kennewick had its own telephone company which proved beneficial given its location close to both Tacoma (via line H) and Everett (via line F). The discovery of oil in Anacortes Territorial Field by Standard Oil Corporation in 1934 led to significant development within the community including the construction of a new courthouse, fire department, schools, businesses etcetera during that decade. However although oil production continued until 1969 when it was discontinued due to environmental concerns surrounding Shell Refinery on Orchards Beach Boulevard just south of town Leadville Road), local economic development stalled until around 1990 with revived interest spurred by Ballinger's purchase of land adjacent to Interstate 5 east of town following an effort by then-Mayor Don Ladd II who believed that this would provide immediate access for Ballinger's petrochemical industry if developed properly; today’s Ballinger Petroleum refinery sits on this property next door to Cheney High School
