The first Europeans to visit what is now Kennewick were Peter Christian and his crew sailing for Spanish Cuba on July 3, 1592. They were looking for a passage to Asia when they sighted Mount Rainier which they named Isla de la Concepción (Island of Concepcion). In 1792 Captain John Jacob Astor founded the first permanent European settlement in what is now Kennewick when he built his fur-trading post on First Creek near present-day Pacific Highway 99W. A year later, Captain George Vancouver explored British Columbia and reported finding an uninhabited landmass called "New Holland" lying between Vancouver Island and Alaska Peninsula that he named Queen Charlotte's Province after Queen Charlotte of Denmark who had given him permission to explore this new land grant. Then, the barrel is carved into an even shape with a dies that allow for precise measurements of how wide and long each shot should be. Once the die is created, the barrel is placed into cold water and allowed to cool. This allows for accuracy and consistency in manufacturing the Barrels.
The first gun barrels were made out of wood. They were used for hunting and shooting arrows. The barrels were bored out to a length of about 24 inches, then the bore was filled with lead and stitched together.
Kennewick was founded in 1792 by George Washington and his Virginia comrades-in-arms, Lt. Colonel James K. Polk and Captain Christopher Gadsden. The town grew rapidly after the land was purchased from the local Indians, thanks to its strategic location at the junction of several wagon trails that connected the eastern United States with Canada. By 1825, Kennewick had a population of over 150 citizens and functioned as a small trading post on the Pacific Northwest Trail. In 1855, when Washington became president of the United States, he ordered General John Custer to lead an army into Indian Territory in order to drive out any remaining Sioux tribes. Custer's disastrous march through Kansas and Oklahoma led to public outrage in America and created a furor among settlers throughout North American society against military occupations of indigenous cultures without their consent or knowledge. In response to this outcry, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9981 which forbade further military engagements with Native Americans until such time as they had been properly consulted and granted immunity from prosecution for any activities taken within their traditional territory. This order outraged many Kennewick residents who saw it as another example of government arrogance toward them. Despite these setbacks, Kennewick continued to grow in popularity due to its natural resources (potatoes, apples, watermelons) and its proximity to Seattle – home of first Boeing airplanes – and its role as a forward base for American forces during World War II (including providing troops with barracks, food storage facilities, medical care). In 1949, Kennewick became an incorporated city under state jurisdiction; it remains one of Washington's most populous municipalities today. Today's downtown is remarkable for its preserved pioneer architecture – including buildings dating back to 1852 – as well as its rich cultural heritage: From music festivals to Shakespeare readings, Kennewick has something for everyone!
On the morning of July 9, 1879, Kennewick was the site of a massive explosion that destroyed portions of the town and killed dozens of people. The blast, which was caused by an explosive mine deed opened in nearby Newcastle, was one of the deadliest natural disasters in Washington state history.
