The population of Kennewick peaked at over 100,000 in 1941, but declined to about 60,000 by 2000. The City of Kennewick is now a small community of about 25 residents located outside the downtown area. The history of the city began with its location on one of the most important trade routes between north and south America during the early 19th century. The Potawatomi people were known for their Trading Posts along this route and they used this area as an staging ground for goods moving up and downriver. The first white settler to arrive in what is now Kennewik was Captn John Smith’s group when they landed on Spokane River on November 10th, 1792 while exploring northwest North America for new land opportunities. At that time it was considered part of Canada and not yet admitted intothe United States as it is today! This event helped create excitement among American colonists for acquiring new land east of the Rockies! In 1875, when Kennewick became a county seat, many local businesses relocated from upstairs storefronts located around Second Street into large government buildings across Boulevard from First Street - making this one ofAmerica's "mall towns". Numerous churches also opened up shop during these years including St Joseph's Catholic Church which still operates out doors today (and offers tours). Many businesses closed due to high competition from other cities within commuting distance such as Seattle or Tacoma - however some continued operations until at least 1984 when all business municipal property ceased operation under then County Attorney David Boren effective January 1st following passage of RCW 42A.00[1]. During World War II many factories operated within town limits providing employment for locals; however most production stopped abruptly afterwards because there was no need for those facilities since war manufacturing had become common throughout much ofNorth America outside urban areas due to air-raiding etc.. After WWII many businesses reopened although a few disappeared altogether; however only two remain open today: US Postal Service Office Building (closed 1983) which once served as Headquarters & Stamp Shop For Northwest Territory & later serves as Post Office Museum & Wellness Center while also containing several interview rooms used by law enforcement officials during investigations; And locally owned Riggs Pharmacy [currently vacant] which formerly occupied 1624 NW Second Street - until recently home to local artist studios until demolition occurred late last year.. A few remaining examples include: General Motors Building (now occupied by University Of Puget Sound), Eastern Brewing Company building (& adjoining lot), Masonic Temple built 1902/03 still standing (although repainted various times), Sheriff’s Department Administration Building also known locally as “The Old Courthouse” completed 1914 inside former post office building& currentlyservingas Town Hall; Both banks were originally built near each other on Main Street before being moved away from each other beginning around 1930s concurrent with bank consolidation throughout muchofUSA... Recently destroyed are several commercial blocks located south /west side including: Carphone Warehouse building (& adjoining lot), Most Wagon Wheel Cafe building (& adjoining lot), Poultry House restaurant building (& adjoining lot) all dating back to 1920s/30s while others have been replaced over time by contemporary development: SW corner 3rd Avenue NE BlockParamount Theatre complex completely rebuilt 2002/2003 after predecessor structure collapsed same year
The first European to visit the area now known as Kennewick was Captain James Cook in 1792. He named the area "Kensington" after his home town of Kensington, England. The first permanent settler in what is now Kennewick was David Wilkes in 1814. In 1821, the United States acquired land east of Yakima River from Britain and began construction on the Erie Canal. The canal connected Buffalo, New York with Detroit, Michigan and created a new economic center for Western Washington. After years of construction, the canal opened to traffic in 1825.
