Kennewick, Washington is a small town located in the county of Yakima, Washington. The population was 2,992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. Kennewick was founded on May 26, 1884 by George Winn and his wife Eliza Jane Smith Winn as a trading post between Wenatchee and Olympia. In 1898 it became an incorporated municipality with a population of 3,000 people. On October 1, 1907 Kennewick had its first school built and began to serve students from local junior high schools and then from the nearby agricultural community of East Wenatchee. By 1912 it had four elementary schools and one high school which served students from the villages of McCoy and West Wenatchee as well as Kittitas County. The first annexation of what is now Kennewick took place on November 15, 1928 when North Bend annexed it from neighboring South Bend. The town’s population reached 10,000 by 1940 but declined to 8500 by 1960 because of loss of land to development in eastern Yakima County and also because many residents left for more prestigious towns in western Washington State such as Pullman or Everett after World War II ended. However, following the creation of King County in 1958 Kennewick continued to grow rapidly due to new government investment in transportation infrastructure including Interstate 5 (now called SR 520) which linked Seattle with Tacoma through Kennewick; this helped promote growth within the city limits rather than outside them like earlier The economy has been steadily growing since 2000 with manufacturing sector making up most economic activity followed by services (which are increasingly based out). As recently as 2006 there were still 7 full-time jobs per 10,000 people while services have grown faster (+14 jobs/10,000). There has also been recent growth in professional sports teams including both professional soccer team Sounders FC who play their home games at CenturyLink Field (founded in 1974) adjacent to campus before moving into their current stadium across Puget Sound;[1][2][3] Northwest United Soccer League club Deportivo Cali who compete on artificial turf fields near campus;[4][5][6] college football team Pacific University Seahawks playing their home games at Husky Stadium which opened prior to the 2020 season;[7] basketball team Marquette University Hawks playing their home games at Spokane Arena across from Campus Humanities building;[8][9] amateur wrestling team Eastern Washington Wrestling Warriors playing their home matches outdoors at Cheney Athletic Complex adjacent to UW–Whitworth student center.[10]
