Kelso is a small town in the Yakima Valley of Washington. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It is home to Kelso College, founded in 1887, and to the nearby Mount Rainier National Park. The first settlers arrived in what is now Kelso in 1847 and erected the first log cabin. In 1855, David Fetterman platted the town and named it after his brother-in-law, Caleb Kelso. In 1861, John Wesley Peck built a sawmill on riverream Creek which still operates as an engine house today. By 1865, Kelso had two stores and 20 residents. In 1886, Kelso College was founded by Reverend Denton Harkness with $1,000 from his own money and land donated from local farmers. Today KelsoCollege offers undergraduate programs in arts and sciences as well as professional degrees such as law and business administration. Mount Rainier National Park was created adjacent to Mount Rainier National Monument in 1903 when Congress passed an act designating parts of central Washinton for national park status. As part of that legislation, the federal government acquired 536 acres (2 km²) of forested land east of present day Kelso along both banks of riverream Creek just upstream from where the college now stands. This included much of what is now known as Mount Rainier National Park's eastern edge northward to its confluence withthe Columbia River
The town of Kelso was founded in 1856 by General John A. Kelso, a U.S. Army officer and politician who served in the Mexican-American War and later as a member of the United States Senate. The town grew rapidly after it was given post office status in 1871, and by 1882 it had a population of around 100 people.
