When the Kelso telescope was built in 1871, it was one of the first telescopes designed for a purpose other than astronomy. The Kelso Telescope had a primary mirror made of polished aluminum and a secondary mirror made of polished glass. It used an aperture of 3 inches and could be aimed at any point on Earth. The Kelso Telescope was also one of the most accurate astronomical telescopes ever constructed. In 1895, it was used to make the first scientific map of the Milky Way galaxy.

Kelso, Washington is a town in Skagit County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern border of the county and is bordered by the towns of Leavenworth to the north and east, Moses Lake to the south and west, and La Crosse to the southwest. The Kelso-Moses Lake area has an estimated population of 2 million people who live in scattered villages along its shores. The first white settlers in Kelso were George Couggan and his family from Scotland in 1853. They homesteaded a parcel of land between Kelso Creek and Elk River about northeast of present day Kelso. In 1865 James Prentice bought land adjoining Couggan's farm for $2 per acre. In 1870 John Wickerham erected a log cabin known as "The Old House" on what is now North Main Street in front of what is now Community Hospital (now called Snohomish County Health & Human Services Complex). In 1871 Wickerham married Susan Auld from New York City; they had two children before moving to their current location near present day First Christian Church (now known as Eastern Gateway Baptist Church) where Wickersham died in 1902. In 1872–73 Jens Fink surveyed all available land within present day Kelso Township for sale to speculators who intended to build a cattle ranch there. The survey was not ratified until after Fink's death in 1886 due to disagreements over its contents; only a small plot that includes what is now West Main Street was patented that year. Another surveying party led by Charles Sibley verified all claims made during this time period with full payment soon afterwards when it became clear that no actual ranching could take place without more than token compensation from individual farmers who did not own any real property within Kelso Township limits On July 26, 1898 Elisha Weisman purchased 5 acres northwest ofpresent day First Christian Church from David Murchison for $5 per Acre which he subdivided into 10 lots yielding an initial investment value of $30 each In 1901–02 Everett McKinney surveyed much of what would become modern-day Yelm County including parts of today's Kelso township for agricultural purposes but failed to receive approval from Surveyor General Alfred Crain because he claimed that he lacked title or interest thereto . After McKinney's death in 1903 his widow applied for permission from General Crain to sell her rights back but received no response After years of fruitless efforts by local landowners various public meetings were held throughout 1909 seeking suggestions on methods by which property owners might be brought together so that drainage canals could be improved or better situated schools built etc., but without success One result consistent with these Meetings was large donations offered by Mrs Stroudman which eventually resultedinthe buildingofthe first schoolhouse in town kindergarten being organized September 25th 1910 insideFirst Christian Church acrossfromHomeschoolers Corner
