The Kelso Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1889. It continues to operate today, with over 350 members. The club has an extensive shooting history, including participation in the Seattle Rifle and Pistol Club Championship Tournament from 1912-1914, World War I (1914-18), World War II (1945-1947), and the Cascade Rangeshooters Association tournament from 1966-1970. In addition, Kelso has been a host to many rifle and pistol matches throughout Washington’s backcountry, as well as international competitions.

Over time, Kelso grew into a small farming community with two stores, a school and two churches. In 1902,kelSO became one of six communities in Whatcom County incorporated as an unincorporated community under state law to provide more opportunities for people who commuted to work in Olympia or Tacoma. By 1910,kelSO hadbecome an important commercial center with several businesses including a grocery store and three hotels/motels
