Kelso is a town in Lincoln County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,841 at the 2010 census. Kelso is part of the Wenatchee Valley region. The first white people to live in what is now Kelso were fur traders who came from Alaska during the 1810s and early 1820s. In 1824, George Vancouver explored the Klickitat River and named it for his friend and mentor, Sir John Franklin. The town's name may be derived from this or from another Canadian explorer, Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1918), who had also named a river after himself in that region. The first store was built on August 12, 1830 by Isaac Brown and his family. By 1840, there were six stores in Kelso; by 1860 there were thirteen. The first post office opened in 1862 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1872, John Wesley Long established a school at what is now the corner of Third Street and Broadway Avenue which became one of the largest schools in Washington Territory; it eventually moved to its present location on First Street between Union Pacific Railroad tracks and Interstate 5 near Cheney Station in 1962. In 1886–87 an oil well was drilled under downtown Kelso; production began soon afterwards but stopped due to high costs associated with drilling mud into deep water formations instead of using more common techniques such as fracking which has since been used extensively worldwide. In 1907 an ice cream parlor called "The Spread" opened on Main Street near corner Third Street; it continued operation until 1951 when it converted to a gas station/convenience store known as "Gas World." A grocery store known as "Mallory's" opened on Third Street between Union Pacific Railroad tracks and Interstate 5 about 1930 just south of where "The Spread" later operated as a convenience store/gas station combination fuel stop; it also closed about 1970.. In 1954 an agriculturalenterprise called "Warden & Sons" started operating at what is now north end of Third street between Union Pacific Railroad tracks east of I-5 northeast of Cheney Station along US Highway 20A (now State Route 91). From 1957 until 1984 large tractors being developed for agriculture were stored at Warden & Sons' property before being driven off-road onto nearby hillsides to be damaged beyond repair by windstorms during winter months while parked on public roads outside their gates days or weeks prior delivery time resulting sometimes long drives without food or shelter back home.. A small restaurant known locally as "Pineapple Pete's" operated adjacent to Warden & Sons' property east of I-5 northwest of Cheney Station starting about 1960 inside a secluded lot adjacent to private land owned by Wittenberg family until 1981 when that property changed hands allowing Pineapple Pete's access only through their personal driveway making its closure largely unnoticeable except for occasional customers coming acrossatsukiagateful props left behind like empty beer cans still standing today next to pineapples growing atop them) This small restaurant served primarily healthy food such as fruit salads etc., up until 1986 when its own roof collapsed shortly after Superstorm Sandy destroyed much local infrastructure making business difficult if not impossible.; some blame[ed] owner Rich Wittenberg for having refused offers from developers over building luxury condos upon site rather than repairing deteriorating infrastructure resulting in decreased revenue Sharing power with developer resulted [in] refusal[ing] requests for help despite knowledge Large portions [of] current village buildings date back least 50 years old! Today most residents work outside the community either driving themselves or relying upon services available via various shuttle buses running throughout the day between county destinations offering unlimited ride privileges! Kelso is a small town in Washington state, located on the east side of the Cascades. The town was first settled by fur traders in the early 1800s and has been continuously inhabited since then. Kelso became an incorporated municipality in 1903 and is currently the seat of government for Kelso Township. The population of Kelso was 9,824 as of the 2010 census. The history of Kelso began with fur traders who made their way to this area during the early 1800s. In 1819, Alexander McKenzie married one of these women, Nannie McLoughlin, and they founded a trading post at what is now Kelso Creek. This trading post served as an important crossroads for trade between Canada and Oregon. In 1827, John Floyd built his house here and started operations as a general store. From this point on, Floyd's business grew rapidly and he soon became one of the most influential men in Kelso Township. In 1903, Kelso incorporation occurred when a group of citizens petitioned to become an incorporated municipality. At that time, it was still an isolated community consisting primarily of Fur-Trade residents. The incorporation allowed for better infrastructure such as schools and businesses while also providing more opportunities for municipal development including land use conservation initiatives. Today, Kelso is home to many notable residents such as Ulysses S Grant (1822-1884), who served as President from 1868-1874; Gertrude Stein (1879-1945); and Dr George Washington Carver (1897-1974).
Kelso, Washington was founded in 1847 as a small frontier town on the Spokane River. The town grew rapidly and by 1861 it had become a strategic military post on the eastern edge of what is now Boise, Idaho. In 1862 Kelso became the capital of the new Northwest Territories and continued to grow as an agricultural center with a population of 10,000 in 1865. By 1893 Kelso had reached its peak population of 30,000 and was home to two universities, one located at Seattle University and one at Buena Vista College. The discovery of oil in 1901 led to rapid growth in Kelso as businesses sprung up around the industry. In 1916 Kelso became an incorporated city and experienced another growth spurt with its population reaching 50,000 by 1918. However, during World War I Kelso's infrastructure was destroyed by enemy bombardments and the city lost most of its residents to enlistment or combat. After the war Kelzo struggled through several decades of economic decline until it regained some stability in the early 1960s when it entered into a partnership with Seattle University that created Washington State University (WSU). Today KelSO continues to experience rapid growth with populations over 50K thanks to WSU's successful student recreation program which has brought many social media celebrities like Justin Bieber and Serena Williams to campus
