During World War II most all American firearm companies produced military machineguns like Thompson submachineguns which required elaborate turrets/mountings not found on consumer types of handguns so production shifted from hand grenades and pistols to cannons/artillery machines which led to the development of today's MIL-STD 1913 rail system for infantry fire control systems like grenade launchers/grenade launchers systems etc... but even this does not include muzzle loading firearms such as shotguns which still require manualaiming with traditional cocking mechanisms
