Kelso is a small town in the Soo Loma area of Washington. The population was 710 as of 2010, and it is part of the Kelso-Cedar Hill School District. According to the United States Census Bureau, Kelso has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.4 km²), all land. The first people to live in what is now Kelso were Native Americans who hunted game on the nearby mountains. In 1853, fur trader David Thompson visited Kelso and saw what he called "a most beautiful valley" with "magnificent prospects for agriculture." He recommended that settlers come to live there and purchase some of his land that he had acquired in Oregon. In 1855, nine men from Canada arrived at present day Kelso and founded the community on a site which they named North Cascades because they thought this would be an advantageous location for trading goods with Russia. The original post office was established in 1861, and by 1865, Kelso had a population of 20 residents. During World War II, when Japanese forces invaded America, thousands of military installations were built near Seattle including North Cascades Airfield which housed Boeing plants located south of Mount Rainier National Park on Vancouver Island. The airfield had no runway so planes were parked on dirt strips around the perimeter for takeoff and landing purposes; these strips remain today as runways used by airplane enthusiasts during fly-bys over North Cascades Airport which opened in 1961 adjacent to North Cascade Road across from North Cascade Elementary School

The first permanent settler in Kelso was George Kelso, who arrived from Michigan in 1853 and built a log cabin on the bank of the Duwamish River. The Log Cabin Museum is located within walking distance of Kelso's original settlers' home. Other early residents included John Fenton and his family, who arrived in 1855; James Hargrave, who moved to Kelso from Spokane Valley in 1861; John Myatt, who arrived in 1870; and Wm. Prouse, who arrived in 1875. The first store opened near present-day Interstate 5 south of town on Main Street in 1896. In 1907, local miller JF Severson donated land for a new schoolhouse which served as both rural school and community center until it burned down during World War II. In 1916, when Kelsea became an incorporated town under state law following incorporation by vote of its citizens (rather than through annexation by neighboring communities), the name change reflected Kelso's role as a thriving commercial center with many businesses operating out of buildings that still stand today including: The grocery store (owned by Vulcan Foods since 1984), several churches/temples (including one now known as Pioneer Village Methodist Church), three hotels (the Holiday Inn Express and two others now known as Comfort Inn & Suites), two schools—one serving grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade and one serving 9th through 12th grade—and numerous other businesses providing services such as plumbing, repairs/maintenance services etc., all within easy reach for residents across all walks of life."
