This magazine was founded by Augustus "Gus" Allingham, who also ran the grocery store next door. The A&W Gun Shop served as a place where people could buy and sell firearms. It was also one of the few businesses in town that allowed customers to fire pistols without prior registration or training. In 1905, the Kelso Rifle Club formed and began shooting matches at local park locations. At this time, rifle clubs were becoming more common among rural farmers and ranchers in America because they provided a way for them to interact with other members from different parts of their country. The growth has been due to trade and industry – including Boeing's Experiment Station on Bainbridge Island – but also agriculture and tourism because Kelsovians have long been attracted by its natural resources: large areas are surrounded by mountains that offer excellent views for fishing or hiking, while other parts are home to forests rich in Douglas fir, Sitka spruce and other trees typical of coastal mountain ecosystems. Today there are more than 150 businesses operating in Kelsovia – although many continue to serve their original communities only locally; others have moved upmarket since 2000 when Microsoft opened its Redmond Campus hereabouts.) There are also three universities located within town limits: Western Washington University (WSU), Mount Lewis College (MLC), and Puget Sound Community College (PCC). Kelso is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. Kelso was founded in 1853 by pioneers who arrived from British Columbia. The population of the town reached 1,600 in 1880 and peaked at 2,500 in 1910. For many years Kelso was one of the most important commercial towns in King County. The post office was located here until 1966. The first settlers to Kelso were individuals named Byers and Parker. A store and boardinghouse were built on the corner of Third Street and Spokane Road in 1853. In 1861, Isaac Howe acquired land near present-day Kelso Creek for a cattle ranch that he called Rancho Howe. After retiring as a rancher, Howe donated his land to the county for development as a town. In 1883, John Waddell purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of forest east of present-day Kelso from George Noble for $624 ($ today). Waddell renamed his new community Lakewood after himself and his wife Clara Barton Waddell (1837-1920), an American abolitionist who had helped organize Seattle's first woman suffrage meeting in 1884. In 1889, Pacific Railway Company surveyors discovered coal seams on property now adjacent to Kelso Creek; this led to the construction of the world's first interurban railway line throughKing County – the Puget Sound Bridge Co., or PSB – which opened on November 15th, 1890 In 1909, when Lakewood had grown too large for its original boundaries (it extended into what is now Douglas County), it splitting into two separate towns: Kelso eastward along First Avenue southward tomeet Pioneer Square northwestward; and Lakewoodwestward along Fourth Avenue northeastward to meet Pioneer Square southeastward The following year saw the opening of KSR #1 service between Everett and Tacoma via Everett Junction Lakewood experienced rapid growth during World War II due mainly to its strategic location as an inland port capable of handling munitions created by Boeing’s aircraft plants at Renton and Kent . During World War II military airfields were established nearby including Walter Reed Army Medical Center north of town on Anacortes Peninsula; Harborview Naval Hospital just south of downtown ; Camp Pendleton just north of Whidbey Island ; Gooseberry Hill Airfield southwestof town ; Asotin Barracks eastoftown ; Grays Harbor Naval Air Station southeastoftown After World War II there was little growth left in Lakewood so it merged with fellow nearby town Olympic Park on July 1st 1959 becoming known as simply “Olympic Park”
The first European to visit what is now Kelso was the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1542. The town was founded by the Klallam people in 1824, and it became a port on the Columbia River. It was named for General Pierre Kelso, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Oregon Territory. In 1903, Kelso was incorporated as a city.
