Kelso was a small town in the eastern Washington Cascades, located on the banks of the Columbia River. The community was named after Captain James Kelso, who explored and surveyed the region in 1847. Kelso experienced its heyday in the early 1900s as a lumber and fishing village. After World War II, Kelso declined as population growth replaced farming with industry. However, since 2000,kelso has seen an increase in development as it becomes home to several businesses and services related to mining and transportation industries. Today, Kelso is an important stop on regional trips throughout the Yakima Valley because of its unique history and attractions.
The first European to visit Kelso was Captain John Woolridge of the British East India Company in 1792. He named the site "Kelso" after his home town of Kelso, Scotland. The first permanent resident was Alexander Dowling, a Scottish trader and fur-trader, in 1821. He built a log cabin on the site and started what is now known as Dowling's Mill. In 1826, Washington Territory was created from parts of Oregon Territory, and Kelso became part of the new territory. In 1877, the United States acquired Kelso from Great Britain for $5,000. The mill continued to be run by Dowling until it closed in 1951.
