Kelso is a small town in the state of Washington, located about 20 miles north of Seattle. The population was 2,478 at the 2010 census. Kelso is part of the Moses Lake–Cascade County Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1872 by Capt. James Kelso and his wife, Elizabeth. It Covered an area of only three acres at the time it was founded, but has since grown to encompass over 12 square miles (30 km2). Kelso's location on the Columbia River makes it a convenient stopover for travelers heading downstream to Tumwater or Olympia. Kelso's history dates back to 1872 when Capt. James Kelso and his wife Elizabeth arrived in what is now Moses Lake from Ellensburg, Washington Territory with their children John and Anna. They built a cabin on a hill overlooking the river and started farming land that they bought from Native Americans. In 1865, Captain James Kelso married Lillie Moody and the couple moved to their current home, which they purchased in 1872. The house still stands today and is used as a museum called "The Moody House." In 1905-06, Captain James KelSO became superintendent of schools in Moses Lake after leaving his position as postmaster there two years earlier because he felt that school administration should be within his reach instead of being relegated toSeattle City Hall where he found many problems with high traffic congestion and lack of space for instruction due to growth around him caused by streetcar operations downtown! His successor as Superintendent was Mrs Florence Hirschfeldt who served until her retirement in 1951; she had been assistant superintendent during Captainship Jimskels' tenure from 1927-1935). Mrs Hirschfeldt also played an important role in developing Community Playgrounds throughout our community which continue to play an important role today!
