When the first Europeans arrived in what is now Kelso, Washington, they were greeted by Native Americans who had already established a village there. The Europeans and the Native Americans traded goods and services for years before the British landed in 1792 to establish control over the area. The British built Fort Vancouver on an island in Puget Sound to control trade with Asia. In 1811, the British decided to build a fort on land that lay between Queen Anne's Island and point Elliott on Kitsap Peninsula. They named this new fort Fort George after King George III of England. In 1814, the United States acquired ownership of Puget Sound from Britain and began construction of Fort Defiance at Nisqually Bay. The US military used Nisqually Bay as an anchorage for their warships during World War II because it was close to Seattle. Kelso residents began using firearms for hunting small game in 1836 when a local hunter found an animal he could not kill himself with his bow and arrow. He turned to handguns instead because bows and arrows were too dangerous for public safety. For many years, Kelso residents relied exclusively on European-made firearms for hunting purposes. One thing that has not changed much over time is the importance placed on community service by most residents here - something that continues to make KelSO one of the most vibrant communities in Washington!

Kelso is a town in Washington state, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-Tahoma, WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name " Kelso" may come from Twoos Lake which was near the site of present day Kelso. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Washington occurred in 1792 when Captain George Vancouver and his party landed on the Columbia River and explored the area for potential trade routes with China. In 1853, Seattle's first post office was established at what would become Kelso after surveyors named it "Kelso." In 1855, cityhood was granted to Seattle by Congress; as a result, all land east of First Avenue north and south were annexed by the new city including much of what is now Kelso. After annexation, Kelso became one of Seattle's most important commercial and social centers. In 1903, construction began on the nearby (now defunct) Pacific Highway which linked Seattle with Tacoma via Olympia; this highway made Kelso an important transportation hub for both cities. Today remnants of this highway can be seen only as faint impressions on slope below Highland Drive where there once was a continuous median strip that crossed several blocks wide between two busy intersections - contemporaries called this "the Union Freeway". A smallpox epidemic struck Spokane Valley in 1889 causing widespread death; however few people returned to Kelso because it was considered too far away from civilization for such an event to have any impact on life there. This isolationism would continue into the 20th century until World War II when many people returning from overseas brought their skills back to Kelsoville (and other rural communities). Postwar prosperity allowed more people to return home and today Kelsoville has again become a vibrant community rich in cultural experiences and history
The town of Kelso was founded in 1846 by John A. Kelso, a Norwegian immigrant. The first post office was established in Kelso in 1847. In 1865, the town became a city and was renamed Seattle. In 1907, the city annexed the neighboring village of White Center and the town of Key Arena to form Seattle.
