Kelso, Washington is a census-designated place in Kittitas County, Washington. The population was 1,969 at the 2010 census. Kelso is located on the Kittitas River and has a primarily agricultural economy. The name "Kelso" is derived from the Ojibwe word "kêlsô" meaning "lodge." The post office at Kelso was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it closed in 1984. The community of Kelso was founded by farmers who arrived during the early 19th century from what is now Ontario, Canada. By 1912, the community had grown to include a school and several businesses. In 1924, Kelso became part of the United States when it was awarded to Kittitas County as part of an exchange program between Washington and Oregon. During World War II, many Japanese Americans were relocated to Kelso due to its strategic location on US military property along the Kittitas River. After the war, most of these Japanese Americans returned to civilian life but some continued to live in Kelso until their deaths in the late 1990s. According to 2000 census figures, there are 1,969 people living in Kelso with 97% being white (excluding Native American), 2% black or African American, 0% Asian/Pacific Islander and 1% other race/ethnicity

From 1980 to 1984, NRA Life was published monthly by NAPA Press with art by Don Freeman. The lead article for February 1980 featured an illustrated pictorial history of handguns from 1775 to 1968, "…an amazing synthesis of print, photography, illustration and research…." In March 1984, NRA Life was cancelled after only six issues due to financial troubles. However, new leadership at NAPA Press revived the magazine in 1987 as Shooting Sports Illustrated with editor Dave Kopel taking over circulation duties. That year also saw the release of "The Gun T-Shirt Bible" by Bob O’Neill which documented handgun history from prehistory through today’s most popular models. In 1990 “Guns & Ammo” published an issue dedicated entirely to firearms t-shirts and hats. This led to another resurgence of interest in this interesting topic during the late 1990s when online retailers began selling various types and styles of firearm shirts including licensed products from several states such as New Mexico (where shooting ranges are located). The name honors George Skelton Kelso (1837-1907), an early settler and member of the territorial legislature for Oregon Territory (now northwestern Oregon). The first store in Kelso was built by Wm. Henson on the east side of Main Street in 1907. A second store opened on the west side of Main Street in 1911.
