The town started as a small trading post on the Kelso River and grew rapidly due to its location, access to water, and natural resources. In 1853, Kelso became the seat of Thurston County when it was created from what was then Spokane County. The county seat changed several times between then and 1959, but Kelso remained the primary population center for many years.
