Kelso is a small town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. Kelso is located on the banks of the Duwamish River. The first settlers in Kelso were members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In 1846, John McLaughlin organized a wagon train to emigrate to Oregon from what is now Kelso. A post office was established in 1848, and by 1860, Kelso had a population of about 20 people. In 1861, an act was passed that provided for land sales within Thurston County to settle citizens who had been petitioned thereto by Territorial Governor George Wright. The first lot sold was at $5 per acre (valued today at $126). By 1865, there were over 100 lots placed under sale; only 12 remained unsold when Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens resigned in 1865 due to illness. In 1870–71, during the gold rush period in Washington State, many people came to Kelso looking for gold properties along the Duwamish River valley because of its proximity to mining sites as well as its water supplies andability for farming. By 1880–81, there were 2 sawmills operating in town; two grist mills and one cheese factory also operated during this time frame. In 1892, a coal mine opened up near town providing economic stability until it closed down in 1951 due to pollution problems caused by nearby mines. Much progress has been made since then regarding both architecture and infrastructure including: new schools built between 1969 and 1976; an expressway connecting downtown with rural areas; an airport serving Kelso since 1987; nearly 100 homes developments have taken place within town limits since 2000; a new library opened in 2006 which replaced the older structure which was damaged by fire several times over the years.; numerous businesses have opened up as well such as restaurants (including three Chinese restaurants), retail stores (including three convenience stores), and a hotel/motel complex known as Holiday Inn Express de la Selva Resort & Spa on Highway 99 North which reopened after being rebuilt following damage done by lightning back in 2003-2004 .
