Kelso, Washington is a small town in the Central Puget Sound area of Washington state, United States. It was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804 as Fort George. Kelso was named for General James Kelso, one of the expedition's leaders. The first ammunition factory in Kelso was built in 1876 by W.E.B. DuPont and it became one of the largest manufacturers of ammunition in North America. The company closed its doors in 1984 but its legacy lives on through several businesses that continue to produce munitions products including DuPont Ammunition Inc., which produces fire arms and rifles under the name "DuPont USA." In 2006, Alliant Techsystems agreed to sell its rifle components business to IWI USA for $1 billion. In 1898, local entrepreneur Samuel Morse opened his own ammunition store at 9th Ave NW and SW Third St., making Kelso the first municipality in Washington state to have a commercial open air Ammunition Store! Today’s Samuel Morse Armory occupies an entire block on NE Ninth Ave NW between SW Second and SW Third Streets (the former site of what is now Safeway). The store functioned as a source for both military supplies (ejectors not included) and target shooting supplies until 1966 when it went out of business due to competition from Safeway supermarkets!

In 1907, Kelso annexed part of the city of Seattle and became its largest resident after that annexation. The City of Seattle annexes portions of Olympia on November 3rd 1910 and renamed them respectively Olympia-CenturyLink Way South and CenturyLink Way North; however, Olympia never became an incorporated city like Kelso had hoped for due to lack support from King County Council members. The last time Kelso had an entire municipally-owned electric utility was in 1971 when Pacific Gas & Electric sold its share in Puget Sound Power Company (PSP) to General Electric for $4 million dollars ($). PSP merged into Northwest Electric Supply Corporation (NESTC) along with other utilities throughout Washington state in 2002 following deregulation which occurred nationwide that year Today's electric utility providers include Northwest Electric Supply Corporation (NESTC), Puget Sound Power Company (PSP), Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E), Alaska Gasline Corporation (AGC), Eastern Washington National Laboratory - Riverton OK/Chehalis WA project, Western Washington University - Pullman WA project as well as local independent power producers such as Soaring Eagle Energy Cooperative which operates four hydroelectric projects totaling 2 MW each located near Yelm or Auburn Hills MI

The first settlers to arrive in Kelso were farmers who lived on the east side of town. By 1870, Kelso had a population of about 100 people. In 1907, Kelso residents voted to move to the city of Olympia because of its growing population. The decision was made because there was no room for everyone in Olympia andkelso felt like it would be too hard to keep up with the growth. In 1916, when World War I started, Kelso residents became patriotic and gathered supplies for war purposes. They also built a few homes for themselves so they could stay safe while away from home. After the war ended, many people left town because there was no money to return after the war. Some people decided to stay and start new businesses while others chose not to come back and start their own businesses because they thought that things might have changed since they left. In 1960, when Washington statehood was granted, Kelso became part of the new state and it has stayed that way ever since. Today, Kelso is an important community due to its history and culture which can be seen through its events such as annual powwows and art shows which are popular among local artists
The first permanent settler in Kelso was James Halliday, who arrived with his family in 1847. The town was founded on the site of present-day Kelso by land grant from Nicholas Murray Butler. In 1880, Kelso had a population of 350 people. It was incorporated as a city in 1907. The city's first mayor was Wm. Henson.
