Issaquah, Washington is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 9,683 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The town was founded by Isidore and Meta Stephenson in 1887 on the site of what is now Issaquah Lake. Issaquah's early growth was based on its position as a railroad stop on the Puget Sound Railway. The townsite was first surveyed in 1887 by members of the Stephenson family and others associated with Pacific Railroad construction projects in the region. By 1893, Issaquah had become an established community with a post office, school, church, and several businesses. In 1907 Issaquah became one of four communities along Puget Sound incorporated as precincts within King County; other communities included Sammamish and Woodinville. In 1963 Issaquah joined King County as an unincorporated area within it; six years later it became a full municipality under state law following concerns about separation from Seattle due to differences in infrastructure and population density between the two municipalities. As part of this process, local government services were transferred from Seattle to Issaquah through anglicization of their name while keeping most core civic functions separate from city government operations. Today,Issaquah remains largely self-sufficient with few dealings with city government outside routineoutine activities such as zoning or land use updates; however some basic City Services are shared with Tacoma/Seattle through agreements entered into between both cities' governing bodies: water supply & treatment for residents (through Pierce County), street maintenance (including snow removal) for residents (through King County), public health services (through KING Health), parks & recreation ( thru Kitsap Conservation District), garbage pickup (& collection) for residents (& businesses), fire suppression for citizens (& businesses)
