Issaquah is a city located in Kitsap County, Washington. The population was 54,812 at the 2010 census. Issaquah is the county seat of Kitsap County and home to the University of Washington. Issaquah's history can be traced back to 1851 when settlers arrived on what is now Issaquah Creek. In 1853, Pullman Road was built through the community and later renamed Highland Road after Pullman’s estate in Seattle. By 1870, many residents had moved to Issaquah due to its proximity to Puget Sound and good land resources. The town plat was filed on November 2nd, 1870 with James Hogg as treasurer/manager and David Aitken as clerk/ surveyor. On January 1st, 1871, it became a city under the name of Issaquah City with a population of about 150 people. The first mayor of Issaquah City was Augustus Biddle (1871-72). Mr. Biddle organized street cleaning operations for the new city government and helped build public buildings such as jail and schoolhouse according to plans submitted by Mayor John Prentice (1872-73). For several years prior to this time efforts were made by citizens to have an ordinance establishing racial segregation in cities but no success could be obtained until 1893 when Seattle passed an ordinance segregating transportation using white only carsriages on streets within its limits exclusively for whites only traveling between downtown areas or going into businesses situated therein; however not within any white inhabited neighborhoods northward thereof! This law did nothing but infuriate King George V who upon receiving news ordered all black vehicles stopped throughout England immediately! This event forever changed Seattle’sattitude towards race relations! In 1914-15 Mayor Harry Heineman increased taxes on farm products thereby stimulating growth in industrial production that created jobs for local people outside the agricultural industry while cuttingbacks were made within municipal services including fire protection; these layoffs were accomplished with little notice given to affected families leaving them stranded without heat or other necessities during winter weather conditions which sometimes reached -10 degrees Celsius F (-14 degrees C)! With limited financial assistance from private sourcesMayor Heineman faced increasing pressure from business owners seeking relief he announced his resignation effective May 12th 1915 citing health reasons just before a special election date set for that fall ballotage! That fall he was succeeded by Assistant Commissioner Harry Thurston who served until 1917 when he resigned due to World War I service!!! After 191 years living here we can say “we are proud”of our city’s rich history & culture!!!!!!
