The first people to settle in what is now Issaquah were the Duwamish Tribe and their allies from the nearby San Juan Islands. They arrived during the late 18th century and named their small island "Island No. 4". The most recent arrival were the Hohokam in 1792, who left behind an extensive earthwork mound complex that still survives today. In 1851, Captain George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and wintered on Isquia Island before sailing upriver to present-day Issaquah Peninsula (then called Point Defiance) where he landed his ship HMS Discovery on July 20, 1851. He named it after his discovery of Mount Baker on November 3rd by land party commanded by Lt.-Governor David Thompson of British Columbia; Vancouver also designated Point Elliott as his officialsite for this purpose. The first school in what is now Issaquah was built in 1854 by Revs.: Wm. Denny & Jno., Aide de camp to Captn Geo Vanegell while Deptford Grammar School was built near present day Tacoma in 1856-57; both schools closed when Puget Sound Colleagues Railroad was extended through town into Tacoma in1862 In 1862-63 Puyallup Indian Band began using Snake River Ranch as grazing lands west of Olympia Fields on Olympic Peninsula which became known as Isthmus Park after they purchased it from John Jacob Astor IV; ranch operations continued until 1906 when government bought all remaining parcels and developed it as Issaquah Naval Air Station including over 4000 acres for aviation purposes with runways/field shelters/ hangars/ barracks/fuelpumps etc.; main runway opened September 15th 1945 10 years after US entered World War II . After WWII facilities were mothballed until May 1949 when they reopened under new name: Westview Airport which remains operational today with military use only .

In 1851 it became an incorporated town with a government and industry base; the towns growth stopped after World War II when most of the manufacturing moved to Tacoma orverett. In 1964 the last major engineering company founded in Issaquah closed its doors, leaving behind a smaller but more diverse community with agriculture, health services and small businesses making up most of its economy today. The city of Issaquah ranks tenth out of 100 largest cities in America by population according to "Forbes". According to Forbes 2016 report "Washington's Most Valuable Cities", Issaquah has been named one of "the reddest" American cities for economic development due to its strong printing and publishing industries which have since disappeared as technology has replaced these businesses. The first European Americans to Visit what is now Issaquah were fur traders from Russia who came down the Elliott River in 1792 looking for land east of Tacoma where they could establish their own trade route into Western North America. They did not find any good land so they turned around and went back upstream towards Tacoma Bay where they established Fort Necessity on July 20th, 1794 near what is now Union Gap Park south of downtown Issaquah. From here they began trading goods with Native Americans including some interactions that led to treaties that changed many aspects of Indian life such as giving away reservations and giving them immunity from violence until further notice while also allowing fur traders access to certain resources like timber but no land acquired without specific agreements or compensation from the Native nations themselves.
Issaquah was founded in 1851 by Captain George Vancouver and pioneers John C. Frick and James W. Mooney as the town of Issaquah on the Olympic Peninsula. The community grew quickly, with a population of over 100 in 1870. The first school opened in 1872, and the first post office was established in 1875.
